Fun ways to get outside these summer holidays

05/12/2019

The Summer holidays are here and what better time to enjoy the great outdoors right at our doorstep? With so much on offer close to Upper Kedron, there's no excuse not to get active in nature's playground. We've wrapped up the top places that are sure to get the kids excited to put down the phone/video game/iPad and get out in nature! Best of all, these activities are (mostly) free.

Ferny Grove Aqua Park

Water + kids = hours of fun.

If you're looking for a way to get out of the house and cool down, then the Ferny Grove Aqua Park is the place for you. The interactive water playground is the ideal spot to chill out on a summer day, while the kids burn off some serious energy.  From splashing in the spray tunnel, stream jets and arch sprays, to playing dare with the giant waterfall bucket, there's plenty to keep them entertained, while for the littlier ones, there's pint sized attractions like the spurting lady beetle and miniature water course.

You can get wet between 8am and 5pm daily, so pack a picnic and head down for the day. The Ferny Grove Aqua Park is just a six minute drive from Ellendale, so you'll be there in a jiffy!

Enoggera Reservoir

Looking for a more natural location to take a dip? Grab the towels and head to Enoggera Reservoir. Here you can swim, paddle or simply enjoy the serenity (while spotting wildlife including freshwater turtles, forest kingfishers and waterbirds to name a few!).

There's a designated swimming area marked by yellow buoys, so do the right thing and swim safe.

If you want to take the adventure up a level Walkabout Creek Adventures is on hand with segway, kayak, stand-up paddle boards and mountain bikes for hire, so there's sure to be an activity that will keep the young (and the young at heart) entertained all day.

If you'd prefer to stay dry, take a stroll along the water's edge on the Araucaria  Track and get the step count up as you take in the scenery.

Enoggera Reservoir is open 6am to 6pm daily, and is about a 25 minute drive from Ellendale.

Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre

The perfect place to kick off a nature-based family day is at the Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, at the gateway to the beautiful D'Aguilar National Park.  Park rangers will be on hand at the Information Centre to help you plan your perfect day, with plenty of opportunities for unstructured play that will help the kids stay active, healthy and build confidence. There are fun missions - like looking out for animal scratch marks, so you can enjoy a learning experience too.

Visit the Wildlife Centre to check out natural exhibits that replicate habitats of reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and mammals.  The Centre also features a nocturnal house, giving you the opportunity to spot rarer creatures, like wombat and platypus.  The Centre is open 9am to 4.30pm daily. Tickets are: Adult $8.20, Children (4-17) $3.90 and a family (two adults plus two children) $20.90.

The Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre is just a 15 minute drive from Ellendale.

Bellbird Grove

Earn some serious steps on your fitness tracker with a walk through one of the Bellbird Grove trails. The kids will be intrigued with plenty on offer, including an old gold mine!

If the thought of finding precious metal is their motivation, take the 1.8km Golden Boulder Circuit. You will step back in time as you walk past remains of an old goldmine, a reminder of the days when the area was a hot-spot for prospectors.

If you'd prefer a stroll along the water's edge, try the 1.7km Turrbal Circuit, where you head through Eucalypt Forest and along a peaceful rock strewn creek.

Allow about an hour to complete either track and finish your day with a picnic lunch and a family game of footy or frisbee. The circuits are about a 20 minute drive from Ellendale.
